Isaac Storm Weakens, But Still So Threats
Forecasters say Tropical Storm Isaac will be weakened Thursday as the storm continued to move north in the state of Louisiana in the U.S. Gulf Coast.
U.S. National Hurricane Center said Isaac carrying maximum winds of 95 kilometers per hour, and can drop up to 63 inches of rainfall in some parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas through Friday. The storm was expected to move towards the west of drought-stricken central U.S., where rain is needed.
Isaac struck Louisiana and the states of Mississippi and Alabama Gulf Coast Wednesday as a category one hurricane, which caused high winds, heavy rains and flooding. Hundreds of residents in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, a small area in the south of New Orleans, confined water after the dam break flood.
Authorities and residents tried to rescue people who have ignored orders to evacuate ahead of the arrival of Isaac.
In the Gulf of Mexico, the recovery from the impact of Hurricane Isaac underway Thursday. The storm brought up to 38 centimeters of rainfall in areas prone to flooding in New Orleans before finally weakening.
Emergency response officers said more than 700,000 people lost electricity, mostly in the state of Louisiana.
In a news conference Thursday, Mayor Mitch Landrieu New Orleans urged residents to stay indoors because of hazardous road conditions.
"Many trees and power lines were toppled. Many traffic signs and street lights were also uprooted or damaged. "
He said the city was still under curfew from dawn to dusk.
Louisiana officials said they were working with aid organizations to provide shelter to help thousands of people displaced from their homes.
